The Johnson Studio Launches Hospitality Interior Design Practice

The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry launches a dedicated hospitality interior design practice, expanding its expertise from restaurants, bars and public spaces into hotel guestrooms and full-property guest experiences.

The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry launches a dedicated Hospitality Interior Design practice, expanding its established expertise in hospitality architecture and public spaces into hotel guestrooms. The new practice formalises the studio’s longstanding interior design work and broadens its ability to deliver integrated hospitality environments.

The new service operates alongside Cooper Carry’s architecture-focused Hospitality studio and extends The Johnson Studio’s capabilities across restaurants, bars, lobbies, public areas and guestrooms. The practice focuses on creating cohesive environments that respond to changing guest expectations while connecting different stages of the hospitality journey.

Juliana Kerschen, principal of The Johnson Studio, says the launch represents a natural progression for a studio with decades of hospitality experience. The practice builds on its understanding of how design can combine functionality with evolving expectations around guest comfort and experience.

The Johnson Studio’s hospitality interior design portfolio includes projects such as Seven South Suites at The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman, The Laurel Hotel & Spa in Auburn, Alabama, Frenchman’s Reef Resort in St. Thomas, The Westin & Buoy Haus Autograph Collection and Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, D.C.

Elizabeth Hughes, Associate Principal and Director of Interior Design at The Johnson Studio at Cooper Carry, says the studio approaches hospitality projects as complete guest experiences. Its narrative-driven design methodology connects individual spaces through a consistent story, with the aim of creating environments that leave a lasting emotional impression.

Founded in 1987 by Bill Johnson, The Johnson Studio joins Cooper Carry in 2016. The studio develops a portfolio spanning restaurants, bars, private clubs and hotel public spaces, including 1587 Prime in Kansas City, Rumi’s Kitchens, The Garden Room at the St. Regis Hotel in Atlanta and The Cigar Club at The Ritz-Carlton in St. Louis.

The new interior design practice also strengthens Cooper Carry’s integrated design offering. The firm provides architecture, interior design, branding and experiential graphic design under one platform, allowing hotel owners to coordinate multiple aspects of a project through a unified design approach.

With the launch, The Johnson Studio positions hospitality interiors as an expanded area of expertise, connecting architectural planning with interior environments to create distinctive and consistent hotel experiences from arrival through the guestroom stay.
