Nufail Shabana Architects: Crafting Timeless Architecture Rooted in Climate and Context

Architecture in India is moving beyond visual expression to address a broader set of expectations around functionality, environmental responsiveness and long-term relevance. As cities expand and lifestyles evolve, architects are increasingly challenged to create spaces that respond to their geographical context while accommodating contemporary aspirations.

This is particularly significant in tropical regions, where heat, humidity, rainfall, ventilation and natural light directly influence the performance of buildings. Recent architectural research has also highlighted how traditional Indian design principles can be reinterpreted through contemporary approaches to create climate-responsive and sustainable spaces.

Against this evolving landscape, Nufail Shabana Architects has developed a practice centred on functionality, tropical architecture has grown from a small practice into an established architectural studio undertaking residential and commercial projects across Kerala and in cities including Chennai and Bengaluru.

From a Small Practice to a Growing Architectural Studio

Nufail Shabana Architects was established in 2010 after its founder, Nufail Shabana, Founder, completed her architecture degree from MES College of Architecture, Kuttippuram, Kerala, in 2006 and gained professional experience with architectural firms in Dubai and Bengaluru.

The practice operates from Calicut and Mahe, with its portfolio extending across residential, commercial and institutional architecture.

While the firm undertakes diverse projects, residential architecture has emerged as a particular area of strength. Its work is strongly influenced by tropical design, with buildings shaped around their climatic conditions rather than treating climate as an afterthought.

The practice has also undertaken hotels, commercial developments and an auditorium project, demonstrating an ability to work across different scales and building typologies.

Its growth has been marked by several recognised projects. A residence in Panur received an award for its exterior design, adding an important milestone to the firm’s journey. Earlier recognition has also contributed to the practice’s growing visibility within Kerala’s architectural landscape. The firm’s own account of its journey notes recognition including a Mastercraft Best Exterior Award and an UltraTech residential award in 2019.

Designing Around Function, Climate and Context

For Nufail Shabana Architects, design begins with understanding how a building needs to function. Rather than allowing visual form to dictate the project, the practice first establishes the client’s requirements and the functional needs of the space. Only after this foundation is clear does the design begin to take shape.

“This approach becomes particularly relevant in Kerala’s tropical climate. The firm’s design philosophy places considerable importance on ensuring that the building’s form and exterior respond to environmental conditions. Instead of introducing architectural elements merely for visual impact, the practice evaluates whether they are appropriate to the climate and contribute meaningfully to the building”, says Nufail Shabana, Founder.

Such thinking reflects a wider shift within contemporary Indian architecture towards climate-responsive design. Research increasingly demonstrates that passive strategies and adaptations of vernacular principles can contribute to thermal comfort, energy efficiency and more resilient buildings.

For Nufail Shabana Architects, this translates into an architecture that seeks to combine contemporary aspirations with regional intelligence. The firm’s tropical residences, in particular, demonstrate its preference for architecture that belongs to its setting rather than appearing disconnected from it.

Recognition Fuelling New Opportunities

The firm’s growing visibility has coincided with a significant evolution in the scale and geographical reach of its work. From its early projects and established client relationships around Mahe, the practice has gradually expanded across Kerala and taken on projects in Chennai and Bengaluru.

Recognition has played a role in strengthening this trajectory. Awards and greater exposure provide prospective clients with an understanding of the firm’s design capabilities and contribute to the trust required to undertake increasingly ambitious projects. The practice is now handling projects of approximately 20,000 to 30,000 square feet, reflecting its transition from a smaller studio to a practice capable of delivering larger developments.

“One of its forthcoming projects in Calicut represents another important stage in this evolution. The large-scale showroom, which the firm describes as a new concept for Kerala, is expected to become a significant project in its portfolio. More than simply expanding the firm’s project list, such assignments demonstrate the growing confidence placed in its ability to translate its design approach into larger and more complex environments”, shares Nufail Shabana.

Building a Timeless Architectural Legacy

For Nufail Shabana Architects, the next phase of growth is not defined simply by taking on larger projects. The practice aims to expand its geographical reach while remaining focused on sustainable and timeless architecture. Over the coming decade, it intends to explore opportunities beyond its existing markets, including potential projects in the Middle East.

At the heart of this vision is a desire to create buildings that continue to perform and remain relevant decades after completion. The firm views timelessness not merely through aesthetics but through functionality, usability and the relationship between a building and its occupants.

This philosophy also shapes the legacy Nufail Shabana Architects hopes to establish. Rather than pursuing recognition for its own sake, the practice seeks to understand clients, respond to their needs and create spaces that retain their value over time. Whether residential, commercial, interior or exterior, every space is approached as an opportunity to create something purposeful and enduring.

As the practice moves into its next chapter, its emphasis on function, climate responsiveness and contextual design provides a clear foundation for growth. By combining regional understanding with contemporary architectural thinking, Nufail Shabana Architects is positioning itself to create a body of work that does more than meet today’s requirements - it aims to remain relevant long after its creators have moved on.
